Everything you were about to ask about learning bookkeeping software
One set of answers covering how our short courses actually work — whether you’re learning MYOB, Xero, or QuickBooks Online. Same training format, same support, same certificate path, no matter which software your work (or your clients) run on.
Most bookkeepers end up needing more than one. If you’re job hunting, employers may run MYOB, Xero, or QuickBooks — sometimes all three across different clients.
The Bookkeeping Academy packages bundle multiple software programs at a lower combined price than buying each separately.
How long does a course take to complete?
Most people finish an individual short course in a handful of hours, and a full COMPLETE package (Beginners to Advanced) in around 3–4 weeks at a relaxed pace. Some students move faster and knock over the whole thing in under a week; others use the course as an ongoing reference and dip in and out over several months, which is easy to do since courses aren’t restricted or sequential.
The content itself — regardless of whether you’re learning MYOB, Xero or QuickBooks Online — is built from what used to take about 5–6 full days in a face-to-face classroom. See the course structure explained for how the micro courses and packages fit together.
Can I go over the training materials more than once?
Yes. Video tutorials can be rewatched as often as you like — they’re short (2–5 minutes each) and focused purely on showing you how to do something in the software, not a talking-head lecture. Training workbooks come as downloadable PDFs, so you can print them and refer back whenever you need to — the same workbooks are sold separately if you ever want a standalone copy.
Are there any prerequisites?
You’ll need a computer with internet access and basic comfort with a mouse, downloading files, and navigating your own computer (Windows or Mac). Prior bookkeeping knowledge isn’t required — each course covers the accounting terms and concepts you need as you go.
Not sure how much you already know? Try the free MYOB skills quiz as a rough gauge before you enrol.
When can I start?
Any day, including weekends — enrolments are processed daily. After enrolling through the course catalogue and making payment, you’ll receive a welcome email with your login details, usually the same day (occasionally by 5pm the next business day around public holidays).
Still deciding which course is right for you? You can contact us first, or start with a free sample.
How long can I access my course?
Standard access is 12 months from enrolment. This applies whether you’re doing a MYOB, Xero or QuickBooks Online course. Check your welcome email or the individual course listing for the exact access period, since it can vary between short courses, COMPLETE packages and Bookkeeping Academy combinations.
Course access is separate from access to the accounting software itself — see question 12 for how to get hands-on with the software, and question 16 for what happens when the software itself changes.
Do I get a certificate?
Most course fees include a certificate on completion, issued after you’ve finished the knowledge review questions and a short course evaluation. A discounted “no certificate” enrolment option is also available if you don’t need one — you can still complete the knowledge reviews and apply for a certificate later if you change your mind.
See what type of certificate you’ll receive, and how it compares to a nationally recognised qualification.
How does assessment work?
Assessment questions sit at the end of each section or course and include yes/no, multiple choice, multiple answer and matching question types. You get three attempts per assessment, and your answers are recorded against your student profile. All knowledge reviews need to be completed within your 12-month access period.
How do I receive my certificate?
As a full-colour PDF, sent through the student support area once an assessor confirms you’ve passed each assessment.
What type of certificate is it?
An EzyLearn certificate of completion, issued from the Bookkeeping Academy, confirming you’ve completed the course and its knowledge reviews. It’s suitable to list on a resume as evidence of relevant, up-to-date training. Advanced-level courses display as an Advanced Certificate — useful context if you’re weighing this against what employers actually look for.
Can I get a nationally recognised certificate?
Not directly from these software courses — EzyLearn creates its own training materials and isn’t a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). If you want a nationally recognised qualification, such as a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (needed to become a Registered BAS Agent), that’s delivered through a partner RTO.

Cert IV in Bookkeeping & Accounting →What’s included in each course?
Every short course — MYOB, Xero, or QuickBooks Online — is built from the same set of resources:
- Step-by-step video tutorials
- A training workbook with structured practical exercises
- Exercise files with realistic transaction data (for most courses)
- Knowledge review assessments — see how assessment works
Some packages also bundle the Accounting Integrations course, covering tools like Hubdoc and other software add-ons used alongside MYOB, Xero and QuickBooks Online.

See all training manuals →Do I need to own the software?
Not to watch the videos or complete knowledge reviews — but you will need it for the hands-on exercises in the workbooks. We recommend signing up for a free trial directly with the software publisher:
A 30-day free trial is comfortably long enough for most individual short courses (typically 4–15 hours), and even for a full COMPLETE package (around 40 hours). If you need longer, you can usually start a fresh trial later. We don’t sell the accounting software itself — see buying software from us — you subscribe directly with Xero, MYOB or Intuit.
Do the courses use real case studies?
Yes — courses are built around realistic small-business scenarios developed with bookkeepers, BAS agents and accountants, using the kinds of transactions that are common, fiddly, or easy to get wrong. You’ll work through each scenario a few times before moving on to more advanced material, which builds genuine confidence rather than just theoretical familiarity — the kind of practical experience covered in the accounting job descriptions page.
Are courses restricted or sequential?
No. You can jump into whichever topic you need first — for example, going straight to Payroll if that’s your immediate problem, then circling back to fundamentals later. Courses stay accessible for the full membership period (see how long you can access your course) so you can use them as an ongoing reference, not just a one-off lesson.
Which version of the software do you teach?
It depends on the program:
- Xero — the current cloud version, covered by our Xero courses, since Xero is entirely browser-based
- MYOB AccountRight — the Windows desktop/cloud-hybrid version, covering Plus-level features including inventory and payroll, taught in our MYOB AccountRight courses
- MYOB Business (formerly Essentials) — the current cloud-only version, taught in our MYOB Essentials courses
- QuickBooks Online — the current Australian cloud version, including its KeyPay-powered payroll module, taught in our QuickBooks Online courses
See what happens when the software changes after you’ve enrolled.
What if the software has changed since the course was made?
Cloud software changes constantly, and course content is reviewed and updated as each publisher rolls out significant navigation or feature changes — Xero and QuickBooks Online content is reviewed quarterly, MYOB whenever there’s a notable update. If your screen looks slightly different from the training material, our support team can help you bridge the gap until the next content update, which you receive free during your access period.
What if I use a Mac, tablet or Chromebook?
MYOB, Xero and QuickBooks Online are all designed to run across platforms, so you can generally use Mac, Windows, Linux, Chromebook, or a mobile browser. (MYOB AccountRight is the main exception with any device-specific quirks, since it has a Windows desktop component — MYOB Business, Xero and QuickBooks Online are fully cloud-based regardless of device.) If you’re unsure, the money-back guarantee gives you room to test it out for yourself.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes — you’ll be watching instructional videos and, for most exercises, working live in cloud-based software, so a broadband connection is recommended.
Can I buy the accounting software from you?
No — we’re a training provider, not a software reseller. You subscribe to Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks Online directly with the publisher. Likewise, official software certifications (like Xero Advisor Certification) are issued by the software companies themselves, not by us — though we can point you toward the right pathway. If you’re weighing up more than one program, see our courses across multiple software programs.
What if I’m outside Australia?
Our accounting software courses are built around Australian GST, tax, payroll and superannuation requirements, but students from Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, the UK, the Philippines, South Africa, India and New Zealand have completed them successfully. The core software skills — data entry, reconciliation, reporting navigation — transfer well even where local tax rules differ. Our Microsoft Office courses are also used by students from anywhere in the world, since they aren’t tied to Australian tax rules at all.
How do I get support during the course?
Support is available via SMS, phone, email and website chat, and our team can see your support history so you don’t have to re-explain your situation each time. In practice, many students never need to reach out at all, because the workbooks and case studies are written to be self-explanatory. If you’d like a higher level of ongoing support, an online course phone support package is also available.
What if I’m new to online learning?
Your welcome email includes a walkthrough of the learning platform, and you’re welcome to call for help navigating it. There’s no assumption you’ve done an online course before — the course structure explained page is a good place to see how the micro courses, workbooks and assessments fit together before you start.
Are the training workbooks available separately?
Yes. If you’d rather learn from a structured workbook than a full course enrolment, the training manuals are available as instant PDF downloads, covering topics like daily transactions, bank reconciliation, BAS, payroll and job tracking — across MYOB, Xero and QuickBooks Online. This is also one of the cheapest ways to learn if you don’t need a certificate.

Get the free sample →What’s the cheapest way to learn?
Two options: subscribe to the video tutorial library, or buy a training workbook on its own rather than enrolling in a full certificate course. Either gives you the core learning content — video walkthroughs, exercise files, and step-by-step written instructions — without the certificate-track pricing. If cost is the main barrier rather than the content itself, a payment plan may suit you better.
Do you offer a payment plan?
Yes, selected courses are available from $20 per week through interest-free course funding, across MYOB, Xero, QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office courses.

View payment plan courses →Do you have courses in more than one software program?
Yes — this is actually where most students end up. MYOB, Xero and QuickBooks Online each have meaningful market share in Australia, so many bookkeepers and job seekers learn at least two. Bookkeeping Academy combination packages bundle multiple programs at a lower price than buying each individually, and can also include our Microsoft Office courses.

Skills, experience and confidence all play a part. Beginners-level training (data entry, AR/AP, credit management, bank reconciliation) suits entry-level accounts roles; Advanced-level training (GST/BAS, financial reporting, payroll, cashflow) suits more senior positions. Because courses are built around realistic case studies, you’ll have concrete, describable experience to talk about in interviews — not just theoretical knowledge.
Once you’re job-ready, or looking for bookkeeping clients directly, the bookkeeper directory can help connect you with work.

Accounting job descriptions →Can I earn CPD/CPE points?
If you’re a certified bookkeeper with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB), you can typically earn one CPD point per hour of education, up to around 48 hours/points across a full 7-course package. You’ll need the certificate enrolment option as evidence of completion. Courses are available individually, which suits members topping up points incrementally rather than doing a full package at once.
Can I try before I buy?
Yes. Free samples are available covering bookkeeping basics and a sample AR/AP workbook exercise, so you can see the teaching style and workbook format before committing to a paid course. You can also test your existing knowledge first with the free MYOB skills quiz.

Yes — from as few as three students, groups and organisations can access discounted enrolment pricing. This applies across our MYOB, Xero and QuickBooks Online course range. If you’re enrolling clients or staff on an ongoing basis rather than as a one-off, see reselling our courses as an alternative arrangement.
Can I resell your courses to my clients?
Yes, if you’re an education provider, accountant, bookkeeper, or involved in workforce retraining, partner packages are available — including the option to sell our courses through your own catalogue.
Get in touch about partnering

Yes — software skills are only part of the picture. Once you’re confident with MYOB, Xero or QuickBooks Online, the bookkeeper directory can help connect you with work as a contract bookkeeper, virtual assistant, or online business administrator, alongside guidance on business setup and finding your first clients.
Do you offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes — a 30-day money-back guarantee applies across MYOB, Xero and QuickBooks Online courses, giving you time to explore the material and confirm it’s the right fit before you’re locked in. Combined with the free samples, there’s very little risk in getting started.
Not sure which course to start with?
Whether you’re brand new to bookkeeping software or adding a second program to your skill set, there’s a short course, workbook, or combination package sized for where you’re at.
