Xero Course 516 follows the scenario and case study featured in our Xero GST, Reporting and BAS Course (Course 514) by expanding on the sample company scenario for an extra quarter for BAS and Reporting purposes.
In Course 516 you’ll learn how to import the bank transactions (rather than enter them manually that we teach in the Xero Daily Transactions “Essentials” Training Course) and manage the many and varied transactions that our typical entrepreneur, Jerry, enters into, for instance:
getting a commercial building loan
buying a commercial property
completing a real estate agents’ course (because he’s changing business direction and running several enterprises at the same time).
Controlling spend
In this Xero course we explore the typical overspending that some new entrepreneurs go through and understand how these transactions affect the cashflow of a business.
You’ll learn about the financing, operational and investment aspects of a cashflow statement and about alternative strategies that a business can take regarding its spending and credit risk management.
You’ll go through other Credit Management reports like Aged Receivables and understand the tools available to small businesses for:
reigning in their accounts receivable
getting money into their bank accounts quicker
using their accounting software to help perform better marketing and operational management by budgeting and understanding their Return On Investment.
Accounting for real-world changes for start ups
These are some of the topics included:You’ll explore some business opportunities that reveal how corporate employees can become small business owners and consultants in their local area with the use of cloud accounting software.

You’ll perform a bank reconciliation that doesn’t balance and then go through the entries to sort out the issues and mis-typing that happens in most businesses.
Entering and coding direct debits
Interest payments and charges
Coding capital purchases
Understanding depreciation
International credit card payments and charges
Basic Payroll entries for micro businesses
Loans to and from the company
Experience a bank rec which doesn’t balance and
Rectify entries to complete the bank reconciliation.
A bank reconciliation is performed once all of the day-to-day transactions have been entered into your software (unless your doing what is called Rescue Work or Catchup Work). The purpose of this bank reconciliation is to ensure that your software data matches the information in the real world (ie. your bank account).
It is at this stage that you will enter:
Direct debits that come out of your account automatically
Interest charges or payments
Capital purchases and payments
Merchant and bank charges
You’ll also find duplicates or omissions, and will need to correct the data that you have previously entered. You may also find amounts that are a couple of cents or dollars out because they’ve been entered incorrectly — that’s frustrating.
Technically the bank reconciliation stage is also where most strict accountants, bookkeepers or accounts managers will demand to see evidence of your purchases in the form of a receipt or tax invoice.
Training Workbook Scenario
In the Xero Bank Reconciliation and Journal Entry scenario we profile a small business owner just starting out. This business owner lends the company money for cashflow, buys a car that needs to be depreciated, spends money on advertising and marketing to build awareness, makes some small sales and pays themselves a wage on an ad hoc basis depending on their bank balance. (Note: paying yourself from day one is vitally important — you would be paid as an employee for any work you do!)
The purpose of this workbook is to take students through common entries that occur on a one-off basis and that are not normally part of the quoting, invoicing and payment entries that occur in the Xero Daily Transactions Course.
Bank Reconciliation — Loan Account
Loans from the business to owners and directors requires it’s own compliance checks, but in this section of the course we’ll include the transactions and code you need to enter to keep a record of funds loaned to the business, including:
creating a loan account,
transferring loan funds,
transaction details and accounts payable,
setting up accounts payable,
linked accounts and
editing or deleting a transaction entry.
Bank Reconciliation — Entering Transactions
This course contains a bank statement where you’ll need to enter and code the transactions then run a bank reconciliation to discover that there are omissions and errors that you’ll need to fix – you’ll get to see what this looks like and then edit and enter the correct transactions and complete the reconciliation.
Creating customer cards,
creating inventory items,
entering a sale and payment,
spending money,
receiving money from a client
reconciling your cheque account to your bank statement.
Bank Reconciliation – International Credit Card Payments
Often the service in overseas countries is cheaper or better or there simply isn’t an available comparative product in Australia so we pay for overseas services. When we do this we don’t pay GST and we incur credit card charges. You’ll learn how to manage
journal entries,
GST and tax coding and
reconciling.
Handling Basic Payroll Transactions
If you are a small business you may pay yourself, your partners or even casual workers adhoc amounts each week or month. These transactions need to capture the right codes and also be included in your bank reconciliations. As long the correct amount of tax is paid and the employers’ obligations are met then the business owner is doing everything right. We’ll show you how some small companies manage these transactions.
Purchasing Assets – Company Vehicle
There will be times when larger equipment is purchased and it’s paid for from your operating cash flow. In this situation the asset isn’t written off as an immediate expense but depreciated every year for a certain number of years. You’ll learn how to code this type of transaction correctly.
Watch the Bank Reconciliation Video
Learn more about the tasks required to perform a bank reconciliation and most importantly the tricky tasks that require some prior knowledge or experience.
Many income and expense transactions are entered in the day-to-day transactions performed in Xero but when transactions are missed, there are no receipts or they don’t have 10% GST they’re more complicated to enter.
In the Xero Accounting Beginners Certificate Training Course you will learn about the Xero dashboards and use the various accounting tools to perform bookkeeping tasks that businesses use every day.
Learn accounting and data entry skills used in every business relating to sales, purchases, quotes, receivables, payables. Follow procedures that keep a businesses accounts in order and organised and improve the credit management of your accounting.
Learn about:
Accounts Receivable Tasks: How to send or issue invoices to one customer or many customers at the one time, to save a repeating invoice and much more.
Credit Management: Credit notes could not be simpler when using Xero; you won’t get confused with them, and they take seconds to generate, just like a sales invoice.
Accounts Payable Tasks: Learn to manage accounts payable, schedule payments, create bulk payments and ABA files, send suppliers a remittance, process employee expense claims and more
Training for accounts jobs

The practical tasks are in the Xero training workbooks which you can download in PDF format and keep forever.

Before the Internet we operated Physical training centres in Sydney to help students in their career and running their own businesses with short courses which typically last no more than a month. We conducted these courses during the day or as night courses which students could complete after work but now these courses are available to anyone from anywhere and you can start today and not have to wait for a course timetable.
Even TAFE Courses have changed and these Nationally Accredited courses, such as the Cert IV in Bookkeeping and Accounting can be delivered and assessed via any RTO (Registered Training Organisation).
Short courses in Bookkeeping, particularly Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks are a great way to learn because of the 30 day free trial subscription offered by the major accounting software companies. Even though we provide students with 12 months access most courses can be completed within 40 hours and you can do as little or as much as you want.
Xero, QuickBooks & MYOB Short Courses
This website is dedicated to the needs of modern bookkeepers who often work from their own home using cloud based accounting programs, These good bookkeepers find that knowing how to use just one software program is no longer acceptable or even viable if they are going to run a successful bookkeeping business. These days its important to know how to navigate around and use all the major software programs.
If you are interested in the Beginners to Advanced Courses in Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks visit our main website where we have the COMPLETE pricing which gives you EVERYTHING we have for each program for a low price.
If you are looking for just particular skills in each of the major software programs visit the Bookkeeping Academy website where you can pick and choose exactly which courses you want or choose courses that will help with your CPD hours for BAS Agent compliance with the Tax Practitioners Board requirements.

Online Cert IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping Training Course
EzyLearn Pty Ltd has partnered with an accredited Australian RTO (Registered Training Organisation) to give you the tools you need to become a qualified & certified Bookkeeper.
EzyLearn became an online-only training provider in 2006. We have deliberately chosen NOT to become an RTO as we are a creator of training content for short courses which, by their nature, are non-accredited. However, in partnering with an accredited RTO, we can also add accredited training to our suite of services.
Our Training Course Focus
In terms of our training content, our focus, developed over 20 years spent creating top quality training materials, is to provide students with the skills they need to use various different software programs. Our content draws on real-world scenarios, with input from certified, accredited and qualified practitioners.
When you subscribe to the Certified Bookkeeper Program, you’ll receive EzyLearn resources as a BONUS, but your key training and assessments will be performed by our partnering RTO.
Nationally-Recognised Training & Certificates
The Certificate IV in Bookkeeping (FNS40222) is a nationally-recognised qualification. It complies with the AQF Standard and ASQA Standards for RTOs. This qualification changes every couple of years the previous equivalent course was FNS40217 (2020).
Successful completion of this qualification will see you recognised for completing units which cover GST and BAS as well as Payroll Administration, especially how it relates to the payment of superannuation: these units are required to become a Registered BAS Agent in Australia.
You’ll also be able to progress in the following career paths:
Contract Bookkeeper
Small Bookkeeping Business Owner
Permanent Paid Bookkeeper – Working for an enterprise
Our Partnering RTO provides educational content about bookkeeping, as well as how to use MYOB: the most widely known and used accounting software in Australia. Our course partnership also covers training in:
MYOB Essentials
Xero
Intuit QuickBooks Online
If you prefer to do an industry recognised short course in these accounting software programs visit our online course catalogue.
Pre-enrol now and Get the Bookkeeping Academy COMPLETE TRIO Training Course Package
If you are not an EzyLearn student and pre enrol into the Cert IV in Bookkeeping the total price for the bookkeeping qualification will include access to our popular bookkeeping training course package which includes MYOB & Xero Training Courses.
RTO’s can choose from a large range of “Units of Competency” for any given qualification. Below are the ones which have been chosen:
NOTE: These subjects change from time to time so for the current subjects please click the link at the bottom of the screen and complete the inquiry form and we will email the current subjects and details.
From our beginnings as a bricks and mortar training business with three locations in Sydney, we have developed training content for the suite of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook). We also specialise in bookkeeping and accounting software packages.
Our learning materials can be used to deliver the training required for the assessment of your knowledge in the above units of competency.
Nationally Recognised Courses and Certificates Delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
We use and recommend Think Academy of Business and Technology for all Nationally Accredited Training Courses. They are an established and hard working RTO (45095) with a number of qualifications on their Scope.
Many RTO’s focus on delivering technical and industry skills that are designed by ASQA (Australian Skills Quality Authority) and have ongoing audits and registration requirements. As a course content creator since 1996 we decided NOT to become an RTO and focus on creating short courses based on real-world scenarios that teach students.
As a result of the reduced compliance costs we can focus on creating and updating our content, investing in our support systems and team and providing good quality short courses for low prices.
